Google Web Toolkit –

Tablets: plus – well, they are bigger, minus – yes, they are bigger

We hear a lot now about tablets and they are actually becoming a natural part of if the IT paradigm. Companies are making their software available for tablets, web pages are being optimized for tablet dimensions; the tablet app/game market is huge and growing. Nevertheless, for quite a while I kept questioning myself if we actually need them.

Smart machines

“Robot” is a word created by Karel Capek in the first half of the last century. It fitted our vocabulary so swiftly and comfortably that it seems to be as old as a word “table” or say “apple”. Indeed, it is a notion that reflects a widely used technology.

Some imagine robots as androids exclusively, but surely it is not the only type. As Longman Dictionary puts it – a robot is a “machine that can move and do some of the work of a person, and is usually controlled by a computer”. So it is any piece of equipment that can replace man for one or several tasks. Fun, isn’t it? I wish I had a robot to do my sewing lessons in 6th grade for me :) .

“Anti-GPS” navigation solution

You’re out of a shopping mall, carrying loads of bags, the children are tired and you are dreaming of your couch. You go out to the parking lot, and there you are…

It is so huge that it seems it will take hours to find your car. Of course, each member of the family is convinced he/she knows exactly where the car is parked and those are different places :)

Sounds familiar? This can often happen to people in a shopping center, airport, supermarket parking lot. But we are sure we have a solution.

There should be an app that helps people to easily find their car even without GPS. Our idea: An application allowing to navigate in a parking lot (especially in roofed parkings, where GPS doesn’t work).

Cloud Computing: hidden costs

It is marvelous how the cloud computing idea struck the modern world. Out of the blue it came and claimed superiority over the existing methods and tools. There has been so much fuss about cloud computing lately and still enterprises are sometimes reluctant to move on, motivating such decision by security issues. Clearly, introducing new methods and moreover – paradigms is not a fast and easy process. The risks associated with a new technology are always high, but also is the ROI.

1. The benefits it offers
As I see it, the two major advantages that Cloud Computing is claimed to have are the lowered costs (1) and flexibility concerning the equipment issues (2). Indeed, using the cloud services you can cut on the equipment and maintenance costs. All in all, the customer is not supposed to be concerned with the staff and costs of the physical equipment.

2. The costs – hidden and obvious
When using services of a cloud provider you can happily forget about buying servers and paying your administrators. All the associated costs, such as room rental, electricity etc, are washed away. So far the skyscape is rather bright, isn’t it?

Time to innovate

At this very moment you and your company are eligible to applying for the Top 100 by the Research and Development magazine list. The annual application acceptance period is begun and you are free to try. For more than 40 years the magazine has been making a list of most outstanding inventions. Among the top 100 were the fax machine, halogen lamps and HDTV. The winners are chosen by a jury of experienced and qualified specialists in the field comparing the nominee with the current products and services. What I love about the list is that only the products that are actually manufactured and sold or at least available for licensing qualify for the contest – this aspect makes the game worth the candles. It is clear that not all of the inventions do stay widely used, but everything changes and there is no end for perfection.

SharePoint: get inspired

It’s almost impossible to imagine 2 rivals in the technology world which could be as powerful and huge as .NET and Java. They seem to compete at every level and it enforces them to invent something new to attract new users. SharePoint is a successful attempt of Microsoft to stay ahead of competition.

Researches show that SharePoint is getting more and more widespread and popular. This is the system which was created to help people work together much easier. SharePoint is a Microsoft’s content management system. It allows groups to set up a centralized, password protected space for document sharing. Documents can be stored, downloaded and edited, then uploaded for continued sharing. (SAIT Polytechnic Teaching – Glossary).

Though I wouldn’t limit its abilities to only document sharing as one cannot deny that it also improves reporting, promotes better collaboration, automates business processes, integrates with existing tools and optimizes the whole working process within a company. Read more →
